Community Services of the South Bay, Inc.
“Inspiring People, Changing Lives”
An emerging program for FirstServe, this health center will operate out of the new Faith Hall Community Center at First Lutheran. The focus of this program is to assist elders in achieving better health and wellness, and creating support structures for people needing medical care. An important emphasis of the center will be training and empowering volunteers to accompany and advocate for elders in navigating the health care environment.
“Aging in Place” is the situation of seniors who are living into their 70’s and 80’s (and beyond), and who are attempting to remain in their homes rather than transition into nursing homes or other care facilities. Because often these homes aren’t designed for supporting frail elderly residents, elders often face significant architectural barriers. Added to these residential housing issues are ongoing challenges of proper nutrition, health care advocacy and access, personal isolation and the need for community, loss of independence (e.g. loss of driver’s license or physical mobility), and a variety of physical and emotional challenges involving mental acuity, memory loss, or, in extreme cases, progressive dementia.
